Dean of School of Labor and Human Resources, Professor Zeng Xiangquan, Director of Social Security Department, Professor Han Keqing, and other professors were warmly invited by Director of Huamin Research Center, Professor Chien-Chung Huang to revisit Rutgers University on April 16-22.
In the morning of April 17th (local time), Professor Zeng Xiangquan and his party met with managing vice president of Rutgers University, Professor Richard Edwards. They pleasantly recalled academic and communication activities between School of Social Work and School of Labor and Human Resources. Richard Edwards pointed out that the cooperation with Renmin University was the most important one in China. The two sides then discussed the possible areas of further cooperation. After that, Professor Zeng Xiangquan and his party visited School of Social Work and met with Dean Cathryn Potter. Professor Zeng Xiangquan enquired about recent development situation and research areas, and hoped that further academic exchange could be carried out. Dean Cathryn Potter expressed gratitude for SLHR for warm receptions of visiting professors and students, introduced recent development of social work in America, and asked about situations of social security, migrant workers and labor unions in China.

At noon, Director of Chinese Affair of Rutgers University, Jian feng Wang had working luncheon with Zeng Xiangquan and his party.
In the afternoon, Zeng Xiangquan and his party visited Edward J. Blouste School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers and met with Dean James W. Hughes for the first time. The two deans each introduced major structure and feature of their schools and discussed possible cooperation areas.
“Labor Safety and Social Security International Seminar” was held in the conference center of School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers from 9A.M. to 6P.M. on April 18th (local time). The seminar was held by Professor Chien-Chung Huang. Managing Vice President Richard Edwards, Dean Cathryn Potter, Dean Zeng Xiangquan, and Dean James W. Hughes addressed welcome speeches. In the keynote speech in the morning, Dean Zeng Xiangquan analyzed the latest changes and challenges in Chinese labor market using CIER index based on abundant empirical data. He also gave solutions and suggestions. The English speech of Dean Zeng lasted for 40 minutes, which spurred strong interests among scholars and students of Rutgers University and visiting scholars from China. After the speech, participants actively asked questions. Professor Zeng Xiangquan made excellent answer to each question. Besides, Dean James W. Hughes and Dean Cathryn Potter also addressed speeches on American Employment Market and Fight against Poverty separately.
At opening ceremony, Dean Zeng Xiangquan gave “Eight Steeds” paper-cut to Vice President Richard Edwards and congratulated the cooperation beforehand.
Dean Zeng Xiangqun Made English Dissertation
In the round table discussion in the afternoon, SLHR PhD Student Zhang Chenggang, who recently exchanged to Cornell University, made a report on the latest research result of Zeng’s ILO project “the Labor Relation in Chinese Export Processing Zone”. Professor Han Keqing and Guo Yu made a speech entitled “Poverty in China: Basic Information and Solutions”, which introduced current situation of urban and rural poverty, social assistance scheme and subsistence security system with a concentration on the development and assessment of subsistence security system. Professor Huang Wei reported on the effects of Chinese minimum wage on fighting poverty and protecting the rights and interests of laborers. What’s more, Director of Labor Development Center, Professor Carl E. Van Horn, Professor of School of Management and Labor Relations, Liu Mingwei, Professor of School of Social Work, William Waldman and Lenna Nepomnyaschy also made speeches. In the closing ceremony, Director of Chinese Affair of Rutgers University, Jianfeng Wang, Director of Huamin Research Center, Professor Chien-Chung Huang, and Director of Social Security Department, Professor Han Keqing delivered the closing keynote addresses. Professor Han Keqing thanked Huamin Research Center for strong support and warm reception, and expressed the expectation to the upcoming visit of Rutgers University.
On April 21st (local time), the SLHR party visited School of Management and Labor Relations and was received by Dean Sue Schurman. The two sides reviewed the scene where they signed cooperation agreement in Chicago in January, 2012, and looked forwarding to further implementation.
This visit further facilitated the understanding and cooperation of the two schools and exhibited the solid strength of SLHR in Labor Science. |
